Song lyrics to When Mothers of Salem Their Children Brought to Jesus, written by W. M. Hutchings (1850)
When mothers of Salem their children brought to Jesus,
The stern disciples drove them back and bade them depart;
But Jesus saw them ere they fled,
And took them in His arms and said,
“Suffer the children to come unto Me.”
“For I will receive them and fold them to My bosom;
I’ll be a shepherd to these lambs—oh, drive them not away;
For if their hearts to Me they give,
They shall with Me in glory
Suffer the children to come unto Me.”
How kind was the Saviour to bid these children welcome!
But there are many thousands who have never heard His name;
The Bible they have never read;
They know not that the Saviour said,
“Suffer the children to come unto Me.”
And still the kind Saviour bids little children welcome,

“Suffer the children to come unto Me.”
This song is special to me because long ago, when I was just a young child of about five and was feeling ill in the middle of the night, and crying, my dear Momma came into my room, wrapped me in her loving arms and sat down on her rocking chair and sang this song to me as I gently fell asleep. I still have that old wooden rocker to this day, and plan to repaint it, as well as buy some new padding for the back and seat, that still has the original ropes, song as ever, under which the seat padding was placed. And the most of the words to the first two verses, or so, were burned into my memory on that cold, dark night. Most of all, I still feel her love ❤ to this day, although she passed into the loving arms of Jesus just over eighteen years ago. That memory always brings sweet tears to my eyes. I’ll always love her and keep her love 💕 deep in my heart until we meet again, in Glory, and forever afterwards.
